Met with Caroline Klukowski – Owner of Fluid PR. She handles public relations, writing and social media for some of the biggest real estate agents in Vancouver. It seems like every real estate agent out there know they need to have a great website that really sells their portfolio of listings and integrates with relevant social media sites but they just don’t know how to do it. It also seems like a lot of agents want to get online, but still do the old school junk mail, postcards, letters etc. We spoke to a couple of agents and all they could talk about was print media, newspaper ads and mailouts. It’s 2010 – time to get with it and stop bombing junk mail all over.
We spoke about some of the successes and failures some of her real estate clients have already encountered in the short time that they have been making use of social media to help promote themselves and their properly listings. I guess the biggest question up front is “do you need to be on social media as a real estate agent?” Which leads into question #2 “which social media networks should you participate on as a real estate agent?” Everybody is talking about Twitter and Facebook, but are these really for you? Why are you on there?? Is it because everybody else is on there or do you have a strategy to be on there and gain benefit?
We discussed some pros and cons of various real estate website software platforms including My Real Page, Ubertor, Top Producer and Property Base. Each one of these systems has its pros and cons and I will go into this in more detail in a future post.
The bottom line is that a lot of real estate agents know they need to get on top of the internet, marketing and social media but just don’t know how to get on it or where to start. I think there will also need to be a conscious decision to move away from traditional and wasteful print media. You can’t be a “green realtor” if you’re flooding neighbourhoods with junk mail each week.
